My brother, George, has been, and always will be, one of the best people I have ever known. He was kind and generous to a fault since he was a young child, selflessly doing for others without ever worrying about himself. I wish that I had many years ahead to enjoy his company and to appreciate the special young man he had become. I would give anything to have my brother back with me, and it is a testimony to his character that so many others would say the same thing. I wish that my brother had realized how special he was: how tremendously gifted and loved by us all. I wish he could have seen the outpouring of grief, support, and love that his family and friends have shown for him.
Through our grief, we need to take away a lesson from my brother's death. Each of us knows someone like George: a quiet, shy individual who could never reach out to ask for help if he or she needed it. This person needs a friend, even though the individual may never let on. It could be a relative, an acquaintance, or even someone we consider a friend. Please, take some time out of your busy lives to be a friend to that person. It's too late to save my brother, but it may be just in time to save another life.
